HARVEST 2014 and tastings

Published 24th July 2014

We kicked off the month with our "Annual Visit to Fulbeck Farms and Fulbeck Gardens Vineyard".  Members of Gringley on the Hill WI; Winthorpe WI and Lincoln Engineering Society joined us at 10am for welcome tea and coffee and home-made biscuits made by me with our Ownsworths Rapeseed Oil, before Andrew took the groups to tour the farm and harvesting machinery, followed by visiting The Rapeseed Oil Pressing Shed - where there was much interest in seeing where our premium quality oil is pressed and bottled.

Then it was down to Fulbeck Village Hall for lunch.  I made everything with our rapeseed oil from bread, the pastry for the quiches, pizzas, mayonnaise for the sandwich fillings and cakes with many people asking for the recipes.  I also asked artisan baker, Steve, of "The Generous Baker" in Lincoln to bake me 20 loaves of bread using our oil for the sandwiches (guests were able to compare our two different methods of baking bread with mine made by hand and Steve in a commercial bakery).  Virtually everything was eaten! and our lovely guests swilled it all down with some of our first wine.  Another chance to purchase produce from us before popping along to see the vineyard and self-catering holiday cottage a bit further along the village.  A very successful day in many ways with everyone commenting on how we had looked after them all so well. If your group or society would like to visit next year, just ring me or send an email.

Two days later saw me and youngest son, Jim attending Leicester County Show.  This was held this year at Melton Mowbray Cattle Market.  A place I know very well, as I have a regular weekly stall there every Tuesday from 6.30am!  We took along samples of oil and dressings and cakes to show-case how fabulous our oil is as a butter and margarine substitute when baking.  Just a reminder - BUTTER is a WHOPPING 54g of saturated fat! and RAPESEED OIL is ONLY 6.5g!  So if you want help and advice on baking with our oil - just email me xx

Many of you have picked up my new holiday cottage leaflets with the new website: fulbeckgardencottage.com. Visit England awarded us GOLD 4 STAR recently.  That's in addition to 2 Highly Commended awards from "Select Lincolnshire" so you are assured of a super cottage.  Christmas and New Year are already booked I'm afraid - everyone just loves coming back.  If you would like to stay with us whilst visiting the Lincoln Christmas Market (4th to 7th December 2014) , you had better hurry!  We are always booked for that event.  The cottage is on a direct route to Lincoln so you can soon be shopping! And when you return don't forget that lovely relaxing hot-tub in the courtyard outside the kitchen door!

Now for harvest - the weather has stayed kind to us so far.  The feed barley is gathered in with minimal drying needed by Jake.  Sons Tom is very busy baling hay and straw and Jim loading and carting it for us and our regular customers who we contract for.  Andrew and worker Ben have now started combining this year's oilseed rape ready to press more of our oil for you!

To keep all the men going during these long harvest hours, I have been taking out lovely salads and cooked meals (when the evening cools down).  So I have been creating lots of new recipes using our rapeseed oil and the men have been taste testing them on your behalf before I post them on this blog or use in my tastings and demonstrations.

I'm off to Wragby Show again this year on Sunday 31st August 2014, why not pop along to say hello and sample some of my latest recipes.  Until then.  TTFN  Ronnie x
