PRUNING THE VINEYARD

Published 29th January 2016

Well after the rush of Christmas, everything seems to quieten down on the farm in January.  The cattle are indoors for the winter, ready to calve from February onwards.  Although it has been a mild winter, the grass isn't growing and it will be April before we turn the cows and calves out - that is if the weather is warm and sunny for them!

January sales of our rapeseed oil have remained high - which is fantastic that so many more people are trying this British culinary oil, its health benefits and realising how versatile this home-grown oil is.

Down at the vineyard, Team Ownsworth have been very busy pruning the grape vines for three weeks.  There have been a few cold and wet days, but the lively banter has kept the team going strong!  Tom, and girlfriend Laura, even put their sheep in the walled garden as "natural lawnmowers" along the rows between the vines.

This year's oilseed rape crop is looking well, helped by a mild winter so the seed established well and grew in front of the pigeons!  They can graze a field of young oilseed rape in no time at all, if you're not watching them!

The very popular Good Taste magazine from Select Lincolnshire is now to be published FOUR times a year.  In recent times there has been a Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter editions, but now you can learn more about our farming and food producers and retailers, where to eat, stay and lots more!  Look out for some of our recipes in the magazine using our rapeseed oil and food from other local producers.
